Keeping Your Aquarium Clean
Maintaining the clean operation and smooth flow inside your aquarium is really quite a challenge for people who own one. Getting one is easy, but maintaining one is different.
The Dirty Water
If you think you are tired of cleaning your tank’s dirty water, your fish is tired of it too.
For easy freshwater aquarium maintenance, use a power filter that can maintain the cleanliness of your tank’s water. This kind of water filtration can solve your problems with dirt, colors, odors, and impurities.
But you have to be aware that this power-filter needs to be disposed of every 3 to 4 weeks for proper operation. If you think you can afford this kind of filter-change, then freshwater aquarium maintenance would not be a problem anymore.
The Algae
Although your aquarium is one of the best and modern type it would still lose its beauty if there are algae invading your tank. You would not want to watch your fish moving around the aquarium with algae floating as well.
To get rid of those algae without removing them yourself, put a Plecostomus inside the tank. This kind of fish with not-so-beautiful physical features will eat the algae and your tank will be free from algae as long as this fish is inside.
If you do not want to put algae-eating Plecostomus in your aquarium, you can remove it yourself using your hands or using some tools available in picking those algae out of the tank.
To prevent your aquarium from being invaded by algae, make sure that it is shaded or covered from direct sunlight, since algae usually thrive in the sun.
The Strong Scents
Another way of freshwater aquarium maintenance is to filter the tank regularly. If you fail or neglect this duty, your fish will be harmed or even be killed because of the dirty environment.
The Unclear Water
Unclean water is due to overfeeding. Feeding your fish should be scheduled for at least 2 to 3 times a day only. Giving them fish feeds will not only make them overfed, but it will make the water dirty as well.
For better type of water, use bottled drinking water or distilled water which you can buy at the nearest water station for only ¢.50 to ¢.70 for every gallon.
Change The Water
If you do not have time, you can change the water at least every two weeks by just removing more or less 20% of the water and replace it with clean one. Do it by siphoning the water.
If you are doing it every two weeks, you can make a once-a-month cleaning of the tank.
To clean the tank, use a sponge, scrub the inside surface and remove anything stuck on the glass. If your tank is not acrylic, you can use a scraper.
Remove all the accessories and decorations and put those in a bucket of hot water and salt. You can scrub those with a sponge but avoid using any soap.
To clean the gravel, you can use a vacuum. There are various sizes for gravel vacuum. Just follow its instructions for easy cleaning. This will clean the gravels from any food left over.
Refill the Tank
To refill the tank, keep the same temperature that the fish need to survive. But tap water may be harmful to your fish due to some chemicals, so make sure you give them the right kind of water. You can heat 5 to 10 gallons of distilled water and let it cool down, then put it in your aquarium. This is how you will do the freshwater aquarium maintenance.
