When starting a new fish tank, an important thing to consider is tank size. If your starting an aquarium for the first time a bigger tank is better. Starting with a bigger tank will save you a lot of trouble in the long run. Bigger fish tanks provide more room for the fish and error. With smaller fish tanks the pH is easier to maintain. Also once the tank is established the bigger fish tanks are easier to maintain. At least a twenty-gallon fish tank is suitable for a novice. Keep in mind the inch per gallon rule when buying fish. This rule insures that your fish have enough space in the tank and good to follow to avoid overcrowding. For every inch of fish there should be at least a gallon. If you have a twenty-gallon tank then you can have two ten inch fish, or five two inch fish, any combination of fish as long as the inches of fish do not exceed the gallons of water the fish tank holds.

There are many styles of tanks such as hexagonal, pentagonal, cylinders and even in the wall aquariums. The easiest to maintain is the rectangular style since the edges are minimal. If you have a bigger tank you may need more maintenance items such as filters, heaters and lights.

There are many different types of filters some common styles are: power filters, Bio wheel filters, internal filters, and under gravel filters. Power and bio wheel filters are probably the most efficient and easiest filters to maintain. They hang over the side into the tank and have cartridges that have to be changed about one a month. The under gravel filters have their benefits and drawbacks. They are an older style filter and are placed at the bottom of the tank under the gravel. They do not have cartridges that have to be changes monthly but can get gummed up and have to be taken completely out to clean. They also usually will not clean as well as a power or bio wheel filter but can be made at home and are cheaper.

Heaters are pertinent for the survival of your fish. Most heaters are the same, but submersible heaters are the way to go. I would suggest buying two so that if one breaks you have an extra. Also for every twenty-five gallons have a heater, so if you have fifty-gallon tank have two heaters.

Lighting is important if you have live plants in your aquarium so they can flourish. Most lids for the tanks come with a standard fluorescent bulb, but brighter bulbs are advised for optimal lighting for aquarium plants.

The North Sea is one of most frequently traversed seas of the world and two of the world’s largest ports are situated on its coasts. The North Sea is mostly renowned for its offshore oil industry; however it also supplies most of Northern Europe with fish, with over 230 different species living its waters. In particular Cod, Sole, Plaice, Mackerel and Haddock are fished commercially. These intensive and sometimes conflicting uses of the North Sea cause a number of challenges in maintaining a healthy and balanced eco system.

Most people consider oil in the region to have been discovered within the last 35 years; however it was way back in 1859 when the oil was first struck, in the Southern North Sea Basin above North Germany after initially drilling for coal. This oil find kick started the German oil industry, up until 1890 a further 100 well were drilled, of which 60 produced oil. Natural Gas was then discovered in the North Sea shortly after in 1910.

Five relatively quiet decades passed, until in August 1959 a well drilled by Shell & Esso in Groningen, the Netherlands literally changed the European oil and gas industry over night. Realization of the vast size of this immense gas field suddenly hit home. The geologists calculated it to be twenty miles long with a capacity of 6 billion cubic feet per day, making it one of the largest gas fields in the world. After this discovery in 1959, serious commercial exploration in the North Sea was soon underway.

Then in 1965 five further gas fields were discovered with a combined total of some 20 trillium cubic feet, which was more the enough to saturate the Northern European markets. By 1969 seismic ships were scouring as much of the North Sea as they could in search for the illusive black gold. The first massive oil discovery was made by the Phillips Petroleum Company in Norwegian waters. The ‘Ekofisk Field’ was Northern Europe’s first billion barrel oil field.

The North Sea is sometimes considered to be a deep sea area; however it is actually relatively shallow. The depth increases from less than 30 meters in the South to around 200 meters in the North. The exception to this is a small area of the North Sea called the Norwegian Trench which cuts through the North-Western part of the sea and is up to 700 meters deep in the area called the Skagerrak.

Current opinion suggests the UK’s share of North Sea oil is now in decline, with present reserves diminishing swiftly from 35 years after the oilfields were first driller. A growing body of opinion suggests that the remaining oil field reserves have been consistently underestimated.

37 billion barrels of oil have now been sucked up from the UK Continental Shelf, with a remaining 25.5 billion barrels still to be extracted. Experts in the Oil Industry believe that remaining reserves exceed current estimated by as much as a fifth. With the onset of new drilling technology, and the ever rising price of oil, it is now makes economic sense to drill fields that were once considered too difficult or remote.

There are two main choices for aquarium plants: real and fake. Keeping real plants alive requires specialized care, above and beyond keeping your fish alive. Plastic plants, on the other hand, are easy to care for, even if it’s your first aquarium.

Fresh plants also have the advantage of being natural food to some fish. They could even be the preferred breeding grounds for some varieties of fish. They also help in maintaining balance in the nitrogen cycle of your aquarium.

Despite their benefits, fresh plants can be hard to care for. Many varieties require specialized fertilizers or lighting. No plants can grow in the dark; lights are necessary for photosynthesis, which happens in aquatic plants just like in your garden plants. Some aquarium plants require more lighting than others. Many require special aquarium-specific plant fertilizers. Never use your garden fertilizer on your aquarium plants, because doing so will likely kill your plants and your fish.
